In the wake of pulling back from St. Johnââ¬â¢s College in Oxford, he moved to London, where he examined the channel organ under the steady gaze of turning into a law understudy. In 1699, Tull qualified as an attorney, visited Europe, and got married.â ââ¬â¹ Migrating with his lady to the family ranch, Tull shunned law to work the land. Enlivened by agrarian practices he found in Europe - including pounded soil around equitably divided plants - Tull was resolved to analyze at home.â The Seed Drill Jethro Tull developed the seed drill in 1701 as a manner to plant all the more proficiently. Before his innovation, planting seeds was finished by hand, by dispersing them on the ground or putting them in the ground independently, for example, with bean and pea seeds. Tull considered dispersing inefficient in light of the fact that numerous seeds didn't flourish. His completed seed drill incorporated a container to store the seed, a chamber to move it, and a channel to guide it. A furrow at the front made the line, and a harrow at the back secured the seed with soil. It was the primary rural machine with moving parts. It began as a small time, one-line gadget, yet later plans planted seeds in three uniform lines, had haggles drawn by ponies. Utilizing more extensive separating than past practices permitted ponies to draw the gear and not step on the plants. Different Inventions Tull proceeded to make more ââ¬Å"groundbreakingâ⬠developments, truly. His pony drawn scraper or tool furrow uncovered the dirt, releasing it for planting while additionally pulling up undesirable weed roots. He erroneously felt that the dirt itself was the nourishment for plants and that separating it permitted the plants to take it in better. The genuine explanation that you slacken soil for planting is that the demonstration permits more dampness and air to arrive at plant roots. Harmonizing with his hypothesis in transit plants took care of, he likewise accepted that you ought to work the dirt while the plant is developing, not simply during planting. His thought that plants develop better with plowed soil around them, however, is right if not his hypothesis on why. Plowing around plants lessens weeds contending with the harvests, permitting the ideal plants to develop better. Tull likewise improved plans of the plow.â These creations were scrutinized, and Tullââ¬â¢s ranch flourished. In any event, dividing; less seed squander; better air circulation per plant; and less weed development every single expanded greetings yields. In 1731, the innovator and rancher distributed The New Horse Houghing Husbandry: Or, an Essay on the Principles of Tillage and Vegetation. His book was met with resistance in certain quarters - particularly his mixed up thought that compost didnt help plants - however in the long run, his mechanical thoughts and practices couldnt be denied to be valuable and function admirably. Cultivating, because of Tull, had become more established in science. She distinctively uncovered the ramifications of what can befall a general public when social characteristics, profound quality and close family and neighborhood attaches assume a lower priority in relation to the fulfillment of material things and status become the main thrust for individuals. ââ¬Å"They eat, rest, and relax for one thing â⬠making itâ⬠(Naylor 39). This statement is from Lester in a discussion with his companions, summarizing the individuals of Linden Hills, of which he hesitantly is one of. Despite the fact that he lives on the peripheral hover of Linden Hills, he feels only nauseate and hatred for the area all in all. This scene right off the bat in the book Linden Hills lays the basis for an excursion through the area with Lester and his companion Willie that uncovers the negative effect when a general public spotlights on things and status and puts some distance between itââ¬â¢s feeling of network and family. We will perceive how Willie, a ââ¬Å"outsiderâ⬠from Putney Wayne with no instruction and no cash, is the one with the best measure of character and profound quality. As Lester and Willie travel all through Linden Hills with an end goal to bring in a minimal expenditure, they experience inhabitants who have undermined themselves somehow so as to have a place with Linden Hills. The best way to make it into this pined for neighborhood is to be hand picked by Luther Nedeed. Naylorââ¬â¢s portrayal of Nedeed with his ââ¬Å"short squat bodyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"protruding eyesâ⬠(3) invokes an underhandedness and practically evil picture in the readerââ¬â¢s mind. The first Luther Nedeed went down not just his name to all the ensuing ages of guys, yet in addition his upsetting physical qualities. The establishment of Linden Hills itself was framed by the first Nedeed who ââ¬Å"sold his octoroon spouse and 6 childrenâ⬠(Naylor 2) for the cash to purchase the land. Throughout the years the resulting Nedeeds based on this establishment via cautiously picking the inhabitants. The Nedeeds picked just the individuals who were eager for realism and status and would not offer any resistance. Unexpectedly, in Linden Hills, climbing implied descending. Status expanded as you descended the slope, with the most pined for habitations being on Tupelo Drive, nearest to Luther Nedeed. Lester and Willie start their stumble into Linden Hills at Lesterââ¬â¢s house where the peruser meets Lesterââ¬â¢s mother, Mrs. Tilson and his sister Roxanne. Both of the women of the house give the feeling that they are not content being on the peripheral hover of Linden Hills and might want to descend the slope. Mrs. Tilson has an over the top appropriateness to her conduct and states ââ¬Å"I was never one for staying aware of the Jonesââ¬â¢s however itââ¬â¢s entirely humiliating to have the most noticeably awful house on the square and to simply make due with thatâ⬠(Naylor 51). Roxanne is resolved to ââ¬Å"marry well â⬠or not at allâ⬠(Naylor 53) and to accomplish this she ââ¬Å"had satisfied her obligations to the Civil Rights Movement by wearing an afro for a half year and taking a crack at dark history courses in collegeâ⬠(Naylor 53). She has additionally utilized ââ¬Å"a decades worth of dying creams and hair relaxersâ⬠(Naylor 53). A significant number of these practices deny their one of a kind social attributes, just as so as to make it in this desired dark network, it is important to deny what makes them remarkable and to show up less ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠. Indeed, even Roxanneââ¬â¢s love intrigue Xavier, a fruitful dark specialist, gets terrified at the idea of becoming hopelessly enamored with a dark lady, calling it ââ¬Å"one of the most startling encounters of his lifeâ⬠(Naylor 97). He even looks for the counsel of a collaborator on the issue. In his audit of Linden Hills, ââ¬Å"African American Whiteness in Gloria Naylorââ¬â¢s Linden Hillsââ¬Å", Tim Engles portrays Roxanne as ââ¬Å"an enthusiastic opportunist keen on wedding richâ⬠who ââ¬Å"actively brightens her normal hungers and those parts of herself that are generally connected with blacknessâ⬠. He likewise calls her endeavors to hold onto her race as ââ¬Å"superficial and hypocriticalâ⬠. On their first day of work in Linden Hills, Willie and Lester experience the wedding of Winston Alcott. Winston is precluding a central part from securing what his identity is by wedding a lady. Despite his shrouded long haul relationship with David, he is betraying everything in light of the fact that as Nedeed lets him know, ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s the main way if a man needs to get some place in Linden Hillsâ⬠(Naylor 75). As the young men perform work for Mr. Parker, who as of late lost his better half, a scene happens in his home as individuals come to offer their feelings of appreciation. This scene shows how far expelled the inhabitants are from their own way of life. While talking about a potential lodging venture close to Linden Hills, the ominous remarks originating from everybody appear to speak to a lot of segregation towards their own race. Alluding to those that would possibly live in these houses as ââ¬Å"people like thatâ⬠and ââ¬Å"remedial cases and inconvenience makersâ⬠(Naylor 133). Where there ought to be some feeling of network and needing to help those in their own way of life accomplish better for themselves, these occupants are so far expelled from a network or culture they rather allude to their own race as ââ¬Å"dirty niggersâ⬠and pledge to keep them out of ââ¬Å"their communityâ⬠(Naylor 135). Nedeed even urges the inhabitants to line up with the Wayne County Citizens Alliance which is brimming with ââ¬Å"some of the most awful racists on this side of the continentâ⬠(Naylor 137). The whole inspiration for lining up with them is absolutely monetary. The occupants are eager to offer their spirits to the fiend so to talk so as to keep up their monetary and material increases. The more distant they travel down the slope, the more noteworthy the showcase of riches as confirm by the expanded size of the houses. On Fifth Crescent Drive, they experience Reverend Hollis. Willie knows about the reverend and considers affectionately him, he went to the Christmas celebrations at the reverendââ¬â¢s church as a kid. As the peruser adapts however, Reverend Holllis has lost pretty much everything imperative to him. He may live in a pined for territory and lecture at the most delightful church, however inside he is an unfulfilled desolate alcoholic who has likewise lost his better half all the while. He doesnââ¬â¢t increase any satisfaction from lecturing his area. The inhabitants of Linden Hills sit firm and unaffected in the seats with no feeling of network and no profound spirits. He despite everything has an energy for service, anyway his gathering doesn't. He attempts to rouse his assembly at the memorial service for Lycentia Parker, however the peruser gets the feeling of the gatherings distress. They are not happy with him getting down on them about their materialistic ways and calling attention to that none of those things matter when you leave this world. The ward sits in the seats with their rose shaded glasses on, reluctant to consider things to be they truly are. Tree Dumont is acquainted with the peruser, first as a little youngster who goes through numerous glad summers with her grandma in the south. It is during these summers that Laurel discovers her adoration for swimming and jumping. As a grown-up, Laurel turns into an effective agent at IBM, weds well, and ends up living on Tupelo Drive, the most desired location in Linden Hills. All the while however, she lost herself. The peruser sees everything unwind as she understands she no longer knows her own character, in any event, making an excursion back home to her grandmotherââ¬â¢s in the south attempting to get herself. She has the cash and the location and the lucrative employment, however no thought what her identity is or where she fits in. Subsequently her marriage comes up short and she winds up ending it all. Amusingly, she utilizes her once adored ability of plunging to execute herself. Tim Engles in his piece on Linden Hills, calls attention to that ââ¬Å"Naylor proposes that the occupants of the lower compasses of Linden Hills have curbed such an extensive amount themselves and of their previous, continuing collective associations, that they are past recoveryâ⬠. The last and most prominent case of Linden Hills as a local that has put itââ¬â¢s esteem in the materialistic rather than the spiritualistic happens at the extremely base of Linden Hills. I trust Linden Hills was made topsy turvy which is as it should be. Luther Nedeed lives at the extremely base and can see everything. His position is the most pined for, esteemed and dreaded. His being at the base is illustrative of the fallen angel and hellfire. Through all ages of Nedeeds and their controlling, controlling, money related ways, they have made a poisonous domain that at long last, prompts itââ¬â¢s downfall. Nedeedââ¬â¢s own local stands by and keeps an eye out their windows as his home ignites with him inside. The one individual who attempts to plan something for help is Willie, the ââ¬Å"outsiderâ⬠from Putney-Wayne. He doesnââ¬â¢t have cash or a decent house, however he has more sympathy and profound quality than any individual who lives on the slopes. They remain at their windows and watch it consume, all empathy and feeling of obligation to an individual neighbor non-existent. Whatever question Willie had preceding that second, we see him come to acknowledge what is genuine and significant throughout everyday life. The peruser sees that Willie has made sense of how horrendously wrong things are in Linden Hills. ââ¬Å"There is a man in a house at the base of a slope. Furthermore, his significant other has no nameâ⬠(Naylor 277). This line from one of Willieââ¬â¢s sonnets about Nedeedââ¬â¢s spouse is illustrative of ages of Mrs. Nedeeds. The sole reason for a Nedeed spouse was to deliver a child and thusly, sustaining ages of man centric standard by the Nedeed men. The first Luther Nedeed offered his better half and youngsters so as to purchase the land for Linden Hi Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546064864829528918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401484121977515863.post-85562584714229416152020-08-21T05:50:00.003-07:002020-08-21T05:50:07.932-07:00Flow Writing Like YourselfFlow Writing Like Yourself Not every writer is an artist. Not every piece of writing is a work of art. I realized this last year as a high school senior when I was frantically typing up essays fueled by caffeine and a tinge of desperation. Each college admissions essay was supposed to present all the best sides of me, highlighting my accomplishments, challenges Id overcome, my individuality, and my impressive vocabulary. Being word-limit averse and untrained in the ways of the humblebrag, I was challenged. In addition, I was confronted with A LOT of anxiety about whether my writing came across as narcissistic or just plain pretentious. I felt uncomfortable using the words I and me more than once every few sentences. I cringed a little when I typed the words goals and future because I was uncertain about both (and still am). In addition, I felt like each of the essays I wrote could be the most important of my life, yet they felt so uninspired on the whole and misrepresentative of what I really wanted to write about. Fast forward to today, and I can point to every misconception in the preceding paragraph. As one of the freshly admitted young bloggers, I am not very far removed from the circus that was college applications for me and likely for others. Therefore, I feel a sense of duty in debunking my own past ideas about these essays, because maybe theyre similar to yours. 1. Its virtually impossible to summarize yourself in a few paragraphs. You are not 100 words or 250 words or 500 words. You are not a response to a prompt. You are not your résumé. Specifically for the MIT application, the point of several short writing prompts separate from the Activities section is to capture a glimpse of you outside of what you look like on paper. Each little essay is a snapshot of you as a person instead of you as a data point (coughcoughcollegeconfidentialcoughcough). A snapshot doesnt show every detail of your face. Likewise, these mini-essays may not represent you in all your 1080p HD glory. 2. You dont need to use the essays to prove that you are accomplished. Thats not the point. This is where you try to connect with the readers and show them who you are and what drives you. Mentioning your multiple international awards in science or mathematics even in passing is just unnecessary. (Side note: most people who make the decision to apply to MIT are in fact accomplished anywayIll let you figure out if this is causal or correlative.) 3. You dont need to use the essays to prove that you have overcome insurmountable odds. Realistically speaking, you probably havent. And thats okay. But what about the most significant challenge question? Your most significant challenge may seem insignificant if you compare it to other hypothetical applicants. But you are not them, so dont stress over not sounding as resilient as them. Theres this weird trend in the college application game where people try to one-up other peoples personal challenges or even suffering. Its not a competitionjust be honest. 4. Your ability to use thesaurus.com will not get you into any college. I love polysyllabic verbiage as much as the next person, but deliberately employing SAT words-of-the-week tends to interrupt the flow of your writing, detracting from your personal style rather than bolstering it. Unless, of course, refined loquacity is your style of writing, you can save the fancy words for more formal writing. 5. Most people feel weird writing about themselvesits okay. Keep in mind that these essays are by you and about you, so I and me are entirely appropriate. Autobiography and personal narrative are hardly ever considered narcissistic art forms, so why should you feel that way about your own writing? Once again, the purpose of the essays is to show who you are to the group of strangers who decide if you would be a good fit for the school. Who better to develop your character than you? 6. Application essays may not be your best writing, but they dont have to be. Have you ever heard of one of these essays winning a major award? Probably not. Likewise, your essays do not need to be adaptable into an Oscar-winning screenplay, eligible for a Nobel Prize in Literature, or even publishable in a school literary magazine. Im not saying that you shouldnt put effort into writing your essays well, but I will admit that what I submitted was not my best writing by a long shot. The fact that I dont remember how I answered a couple of the questions should be evidence enough of the fact that my essays werent groundbreaking or profound. People are able to get in even with spelling errors in their applications. Less than perfect writing is not a dealbreaker, but please proofread anyway. So how should I start writing these essays? The trick is that there isnt a trick to it. I can tell you what works for me, though. After some rushed essays destined for schools that werent MIT, I settled into a groove of writing for the college application. This groove is what people call flow or the zone a state of enjoyably intense focus on or absorption in a task. Flow is the best thing that Ive experienced at MIT so far. Last Sunday, I knocked out two psets, one after the other, days before they were due. If youve never gone here, maybe you dont understand the amount of focus and time that takes. But I enjoyed it. A side effect has been that Ive been seeing psets in things that are definitely not psets. As I watched the MIT Symphony Orchestra, I couldnt help but see the F-holes (yes thats what theyre called) in the cellos as double integrals. Walking across the Harvard Bridge, I briefly thought that the oxygen at the end of the word CITGO on that famous sign near Fenway needed some lone pairs in order to be accurate. Ive found that my writing is better when Im in a mental state similar to flow. I keep the objective at the back of my mind for a few days, looking for inspiration in the ordinary along the way. Then I sit down to write, loosely at first, refining my thoughts as I go. There is nothing wrong with starting over if your first attempt doesnt work out. Of course, this is easier to do when you arent rushing to submit an essay before a deadline. Its also easy to forget that the first attempt may be the hardest one. Writers block is a terrible affliction with no known cure, but here are some ways Ive tried to fight it. (Commence list number 2!) 1. Draw some doodles. Squiggly lines help you to think creatively. (This helps me, at least). 2. Move around. Go for a walk. Dance a little. Get the blood flowing to your brain. 3. Play a simple game. This may seem counterintuitive if focus is your main goal, but your subconscious mind will be working on the whole writers block issue while you play (so its smart to take this kind of break). So there you have it, Early Action applicants who maybe havent started on Part 2 yet (Ive kind of been in your shoes). Best of luck. However, the rise of income inequality over the past decade has become a major economic issue in America, affecting 99% of working citizens. With an increasing gap in income inequality between the top 1% and bottom 99% of citizens, negative repercussions Americas health care system are becoming more prominent. Income inequality has resulted in higher health insurance premiums (the most expensive of any developed country) and a lack in the quality of health care one receives. Income inequality has forced older residents to focus their income earnings on more basic needs such as food and shelter, rather than spend it on costly health care. This has made it impossible to expend the little savings they have accumulated on health care costs in the late years of their life because they simply cannot afford it. In addition, income inequality impacts the ability for many people to receive outpatient hospital care because they canââ¬â¢t afford it. Misuzu Fujita et al. found that there is a linear pattern associated with the level of income and the number of visits to an outpatient care service provider. The assumption has been made that ââ¬Å"poor people have limited access to proper outpatient care, despite having a greater severity of ailmentsâ⬠(Fujita et al.). Itââ¬â¢s about global warming. This issue will more than likely take away from everyone in the end, or at least humanityââ¬â¢s efforts to be a greater civilization, if you donââ¬â¢t take care of it. My question is, why arenââ¬â¢t you? For billions of years your Earth withstood countless hardships and has since lived among the cosmos, but now itââ¬â¢s going to be intoxicated and fall ill in a manner of hundreds of years, because of you? Global warming is the issue of the earth warming up due to manââ¬â¢s technological accomplishments since the industrial revolution, greatly committing to the massive unnatural build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and it comes up with a great deal of many other problems, including pollution, the maintaining of ecosystems in the polar regions, and the depleting rate of fossil fuels and non-renewable energy sources. But besides the problem itself, which is already a major issue, there comes the people. There are more than one sides to a problem, and in this case, itââ¬â¢s about whether global warming is actually real or not. There are those who side that it is, and those who side that it isnââ¬â¢t, and even those who say that humans arenââ¬â¢t causing it. Van Eyck perfected the technique of writing oil paints and became, thus, the ancestor of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. Dutch artist Jan van Eyck was very famous in his time. The most important artist of our century so named Jan van Eyck his younger contemporary, Italian humanist Bartolomeo Fazio. He was born between 1390-1400 in Maaseik. Unfortunately, little is known about the infant and youthful life of the artist. From 1425 to 1429 years he worked for the Duke Philip the Goodà in Lille. He carried out various artwork, and even some diplomatic assignments (such as mediation in marriage, for example). And also, Jan van Eyck was the godfather of Philipââ¬â¢s son. The Van Eyck was highly valued by Duke and considered him as a cultured and educated man, unparalleled in art and knowledge. Already mentioned Bartolomeo Facio wrote in the book on the famous men of his day that Jan was fascinated with geometry, created a kind of a geographic map. The artists experiments in the field of oil paint technology speak of knowledge in chemistry. In addition, he was interested in botany, which is demonstrated by his paintings. A lot of controversy arises around the artists paintings and his relationship with his brother. Their relationship with Hubert created an aura of austerity. His name is mentioned next to the name of Yana several times, and there is very little information. Most scientists believe that Hubert was much older and taught Jan the skill of the painter. Some of the pictures they painted together and some separately. There are a huge number of paintings, the author of which has not been identified. But also, there is a version that Hubert was not so much an artist as a decorator, and with his brother, they worked as a family contract. Other researchers believe that Hubert just a namesake and a very average artist in fact. And some, in general, believe that no Hubert did not exist at all, and all this is a hoax. Key Ideas in painting In the book Secret Knowledge British artist David Hockney published an interesting idea according to which Jan van Eyck and his other contemporary artists used optical devices, such as concave mirrors, to design images on the surface of the canvas. This would allow the artist to capture the smallest details of various complex objects, such as jewelry, folds of clothing, hairs in the hair, and the fabric textures, in general, are depicted with diabolical precision. His manner of multi-layered writing allowed to achieve depth and richness of color. Saturated sparkling colors have helped the artist to emphasize the realism of what is happening and to show wealth and material abundance practically on each of his paintings. Van Eyck perfected the technique of oil painting. With the help of oil, the artist achieved realism of the highest degree. He worked on oak boards (most often Baltic oak), after, the canvas was covered with a dense layer of white soil, to obtain a smooth, shiny surface. Then he applied a drawing, sometimes very detailed, then did a translucent underpainting and began to apply one after another translucent layer of oil. The main means of medieval painting on wood was the tempera ââ¬âit is painted consisting of a finely milled pigment mixed with egg yolk and diluted with water. It was thick and quickly dried up, which did not allow the artist to create the main tonal transitions. Oil paint is viscous, slowly drying substance made it possible to apply a variety of methods of painting from thin, translucent ink layers to dense, opaque layers of paint. With the help of oil paints, it was possible to obtain the innumerable shades needed to transfer the three-dimensional image, and also, for the first time in painting, thick dark shadows. Compared with the egg tempera, wax paints, and frescoes, oil paints enjoyed an advantage, because now the artist had the opportunity to change the design in the process of work. Without them, the Flemish painters could not reach such heights in the transfer of the visible world. .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 , .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .postImageUrl , .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 , .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2:hover , .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2:visited , .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2:active { border:0!important; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2:active , .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2 .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8714931f3b19f4e743581ceb07e2ffa2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Diego RiveraFamous paintings made by Jan van Eyck The Ghent Altarpiece One of the most famous paintings of Van Eyck is the Ghent Altar, which began his brother, but he died in 1426, and Ian continued and completed this work. The Ghent altar is a large two-tier, multi-part folding-series of paintings and hundreds of figures are united in it by an idea and architectonics. The greatest work of art of the XV century. It consists of 12 wooden panels and an external frame (now lost). The iconography of the altar has not yet been deciphered completely and raises many questions. In 2016, eight pieces of the altar were restored and exhibited for public viewing. Madonna of chancellor rolin Van Eyck created a series of paintings dedicated to the Madonna, and also was a true master of the portrait. In the altar work The Madonna of Chancellor Rolen the artists method becomes more complicated. This picture was created by the Dutch painter Jan van Eyck in 1435. Not very large (6662 cm), it seems larger than its actual size. The picture depicts Chancellor Nicolas Rolen (1376? -1462). He was born in Odeon in the bourgeois family, Nicholas was a famous patron of art, he always helped painters and supported their undertakings, ordered a lot of paintings, as, indeed, this one. He also took part in the creation of the system of the early Absolutist state administration of Duke Philip the Good. The painting was before time in the church belonging to the Chancellor Notre Dame Du Chatelet in the city of Odeune (Burgundy, France). In 1793, the church was burnt, but the picture was saved. After that, for about ten years, the painting was in the city cathedral of Otien, and then in 1805 entered the Louvre. Portrait of Giovanni arnolfini and his wife The Arnolfini Portrait is the first known in European painting pair portrait, written in 1434 in Bruges. According to the studies of numerous art historians, Jan van Eyck portrayed merchant Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini with his wife. Others are opponents of this version because the heroes are not in the wrong hands and not on those fingers are wearing rings. Plus, a handshake is not characteristic of wedding ceremonies. And in general, the portrait was written after the death of a woman. Giovanni di Nikolao in 1426 took his 13-year-old Constanza Trent to wife. Her mother Bartholomew, in a letter dated February 26, 1433, addressed to Lorenzo de Medici, reports the death of Constantza. The extinguished candle in the chandelier above the woman is treated as another proof that the painting was written after the death of the lady. Still, others generally claim that in the picture van Eyck portrayed himself with his wife, Margaret. Crucifixion and last judgment diptych The picture-diptych was written by the Eyky brothers in 1420-1425. Is a two-folded folding large enough, in comparison with other works of Van Eyck, a size of 56.5 x 19.5 cm (each leaf)? There is a suggestion that, in fact, there were three canvases. The paintings began to be written two years before the Ghent altar and three more years of work were conducted in parallel. On the vertical axis, you can see the key moments of the Last Judgment: Christ is the judge at the top, and the Archangel Michael, who controls the underworld. Next, to Jesus, you can see the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, who seem to float above people who have entered paradise. Some parts of the painting contain inscriptions in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. In addition, Samsung recorded a 631 percent increase in sales between May and January 2013. In light of this, it is apparent that the dehumidifier mark et has a significant potential for a company wishing to invest in new areas. Introduction Companies need to regularly evaluate their markets to determine their success. A company may also seek to enter new markets in order to support growth. Such a business requires information touching on the new market in order to make an informed decision (Esslinger 2009). For example, it is important to gather information on the customer needs. Data about other businesses operating in the market should also be sought. It is important to study the nature of the existing regulations to better understand possible barriers to entry. Companies seeking to enter new markets have to make a number of considerations prior to making any investments. To begin with, the market must be viable and able to achieve higher returns compared to other possible opportunities. The new market should also be easy to enter. As such, the company should encounter minimum constraints as it seeks to invest capital into the n ew opportunity. Before selecting the preferred opportunity, the management team must discuss and review a number proposed opportunities. The most promising venture is then selected. In most cases, the board of directors is involved in the evaluation process (Hague 2003). Usually, a project manager is then appointed to help the company further explore the market opportunity and determine its feasibility.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Following the assessment, the project administrator makes recommendations to the board. They may propose for the company to enter into the new market or abandon the venture. In cases where it is recommended that the opportunity presented by the new market be exploited, the project manager needs to present to the board what actions need to be taken in order to enter into the new frontier. As such, they must come up with an action plan that is to be implemented. Timescales need to be clearly stated in order to help the board determine the implications that the implementation will have on their business. An execution proposal is also required to guide the implementation of the project (Kelley Littman 2001). The current paper entails an evaluation, action plan, and execution proposal for a refrigeration appliances manufacturing company wishing to enter into the dehumidifier market. The company has identified the need to expand its activities. After careful considerations, the dehumidifier market was identified as a potentially good opportunity for the company (Chakravarthy Krishnamoorthi 2013). As the manager appointed to spearhead the evaluation, planning, and execution of the market entry process, the author of this report is required to assess the venture and recommend to the board of directors the next course of action. If entry is recommended, the a uthor will provide an action plan and a proposal for the execution of the project. An Evaluation of the Dehumidifier Market Dehumidifiers are mostly used in homes. However, they can also be used in an industrial setting, especially in climatic chambers. The appliance is used to reduce humidity. It works by extracting moisture from the atmosphere, which is then collected as water and later discarded once it has reached the maximum level. The water collected from the appliance is not suitable for drinking since it has a large population of contaminants. Other dehumidifiers expel the water in form of vapour. As a result, the user is not required to manually discard the water that is extracted.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Evaluation of the Dehumidifier Market specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More There are a number of companies that manufacture the appliances across the world today (Warmefjord 2011). Most of the entitie s that produce refrigerators are also involved in the manufacture of dehumidifiers. They include LG, Samsung, and Ramtons. The main reason behind this is that the appliance operates almost on the same principles as the refrigerator. The company analysed in this report chose to venture into the dehumidifier market. The decision was arrived at following consultations made by the members of the board of directors. It was clear to the board that the dehumidifier market will provide the business with enhanced opportunities to make profits (Stelzner 2011). Being a common household appliance, most individuals purchase this product. As a result, there is high demand for the appliance in the market. The gadgets also have a simple design that makes it easy to manufacture them. They are also small in size. As such, less material is required to build them. Dehumidifiers are also portable. As a result, they are easily installed in homes, offices, and manufacturing plants (Tomovic 2009). Their en ergy efficiency greatly depends on the technology used to assemble them. The efficacy of a humidifier is determined by the amount of moisture it can extract in a day. The water collected is usually measured in form of pints. Dehumidifiers with high ranges of functionalities are mostly preferred. The need for the appliance is mostly informed by health and comfort concerns among the buyers (Norman 2012). By reducing the amount of moisture present in the surroundings, musty odour, which is usually associated with dampness, is eliminated. Most people find high humidity to be a major cause of discomfort. The situation is worsened during hot seasons when the body attempts to cool itself through perspiration. Since the air is already saturated, it cannot take up any more moisture. As a result, the sweat remains on the body surface. Individuals become extremely uncomfortable since their bodies are unable to lose heat.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Dehumidifiers improve the quality of life by stabilising the quality of air in the surroundings. Being a luxurious item, most customers are not concerned with the price attached to the appliance. On the contrary, they focus more on the quality of service that they experience from it. A company wishing to enter into this market must carefully evaluate the quality of the appliances that it can produce. However, it is important to note that the dehumidifier is not a preserve of the wealthy in the society (Haines 2009). Most middle class families also purchase this item. In developed countries, the appliances are common in most households. To effectively serve the needs of the various market segments, it is paramount to produce dehumidifiers of varying quality and prices. Dehumidifiers have also been found to help ease the peopleââ¬â¢s way of life. With the use of the appliance, laundry can dry at a faster rate since the air in the surrounding is not saturated with moisture. Through the use of the dehumidifier, foodstuffs, such as cereals, can be better preserved through drying. The absence of excessive moisture ensures that the growth of pathogenic microbes, such as moulds and aflatoxin, is prevented. The ideal level of moisture in the atmosphere is usually below 50 percent. Preferably, relative humidity should range between 30 and 50 percent. In case of lower temperatures, the air is said to be dry (Haines 2009). Dehumidifiers are commonly used for health reasons. As stated earlier, the accumulation of moisture in the atmosphere causes leads to musty odours. The dumpiness resulting from the moisture supports the growth of pathogens. Bacteria flourish in such environments, predisposing the population to a wide range of diseases. As a result, health practitioners, especially those specialising in respiratory problems, encourage their clients to purchase the appliance. High humidity also leads to the growth of mould, which is a major cause of food poisoning toda y. Health practitioners have also discovered that body moisture that remains on the skin following perspiration as a result of high humidity may lead to loss of sleep. High humidity has also been found to encourage the growth of woodlice, cloth moths, dust mites, cockroaches, and fleas. The organisms are vectors for most microbial diseases. The realisation by the members of the community that the appliance will not only improve their quality of life, but also help promote their health, has helped expand the humidifier market across the globe (Kalb 1992). As stated above, the importance of the dehumidifiers cannot be underestimated. As a result, the demand for these appliances has increased over the years. The sales of dehumidifiers have also gone up over the past few decades. In Korea, the sales of these gadgets have grown from 40,000 units in 2009 to 1.5 million in 2013. Samsung, one of the worldââ¬â¢s leading manufacturers of dehumidifiers, reported a 631 percent growth in the sales of the appliances in the period between January and May 2013 (Funk 2014). The statistics serves as evidence that the market is viable for the company reviewed in this report. Many companies are moving in to exploit the opportunities available in this market. The organisation should not be left out in this quest. As the population becomes more aware of the reasons necessitating the purchase of the appliances, the demand is likely to go even higher (Nassar Lupien 2004). The company should be effectively positioned to exploit the opportunity in the coming fiscal year. Action Plan with Timescales Following an evaluation of the dehumidifier market, the project manager recommended to the board of directors for the company to enter into the new segment. The various departments involved in the project were notified in order to ensure that the adoption process goes on smoothly (Chakravarthy Krishnamoorthi 2013). As the manager, I requested for a team of four individuals who would hel p in the formulation of the action plan. The team is to be comprised of individuals from various departments in the company. More specifically, the team members will be drawn from the finance, human resource, production, and sales departments. The four are specialists in their various fields and have in the past participated in similar projects implemented by the company. Each of the members is expected to represent the interests of their department. Prior to making key decisions, the heads of the departments will be consulted in order to ensure that the project succeeds (Chakravarthy 2001). One of the major reasons why the team members were selected from the various departments is to ease the process of lobbying the sections to support the decisions of the team. As the project manager, I will be required to coordinate all the activities of the team and report to the board of directors on the progress achieved. In order realise the goals set for the project in venturing into the deh umidifier market, the team will be required to come up with an action plan. The plan will be composed of the steps that are to be followed to achieve the set objectives (Chary 2009). In the plan, all the resources required for the successful completion of the project are clarified. As such, it will serve as the blueprint to be followed by the project manager. The main goal of the project will also be broken down into smaller and better manageable milestones. The milestones are to be evaluated using SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time based) guidelines. Timelines to be adhered to are also to be realistic and attainable in the event that all goes well for the team as planned (Trott 2008). All the team members are required to do their best to ensure that the timelines are met. The action plan for the companyââ¬â¢s entry into the dehumidifier market will be broken down into five major parts. The sections involve initiation, planning, execution, control, and c losure. The tasks are to be carried out in this specific order to ensure that activities are executed in a systematic manner. Execution Proposal As stated earlier, initiation is the first step of the project. During the initiation process, the proposed venture will be evaluated once more and additional recommendations made. The project charter will then be developed. The charter will entail all the stakeholders involved in the realisation of the plan. In this case, the stakeholders will be the companyââ¬â¢s shareholders, the board, the competitors, and the customers (Stratten 2012). The needs and possible concerns of each and every group of stakeholders will be evaluated. The project charter will then be submitted to the board for further assessment. Once the board has evaluated it, the members may decide to go ahead and endorse the plan or oppose it. In this case, the project manager will present a strong case to the board prompting the approval of the charter. The team will the n embark on the second phase of the project, which is planning. Once the project has been endorsed, it will be up to the project manager to start planning for its implementation. The first step will be to formulate a scope statement. During planning, the project manager will work in collaboration with the heads of departments in order to help them provide a specialist who has worked in similar projects before (Thompson 2007). Consultations with the heads of departments will also ensure that the team members are exempted from their every day jobs and responsibilities in the company until the project is completed. The project team will then hold a kick-off meeting (Benyus 2009). In the meeting, the project plan will be developed and discussed. The plan is to be in line with the objectives of the project. Timelines will also be specified in order to ensure that the team remains objectives. The proposal will then be passed on to the departments involved in the implementation of the proj ect. The departments are finance, human resource, production, and sales. The purpose for this is to make the plan as realistic as possible (Steffen 2008). The heads of department will be expected to give their concerns regarding the plan and suggest changes where needed. The final stage of planning will involve submission of the plan to the board of directors. Since they mark the authority of the company, they will approve the plan. They may also decide to suggest changes to the project team. Once the plan has been approved, the venture will progress to the next stage, which involves execution. At the start of the execution process, a meeting will be convened. Here, team members will get an opportunity to discuss what they expect to encounter. Based on the plan, an estimated budget will have been prepared. The finance department will be required to release the necessary funds in order for the project to kick off. The team will then start the procurement process (Papanek 1992). Other companies that deal with the installation of dehumidifier manufacturing plants will be invited for the tendering process. The suppliers of the building materials will also be expected to tender their offers to the project team. Since professionals dealing with the production of dehumidifiers will also be required, the project team is requires to identify firms offering such services (Poli 2001). The offers will then be examined to identify which firms will offer goods and services in the most cost effective and convenient manner. After the procurement process is over, the installation of the necessary structures will commence. It is expected that the finance department will provide all the necessary funding in order to ensure the success of the project. The human resource department will also be expected to provide the team with a professional workforce whenever need arose (Ferrara 2012). The department will also be required to train workers on how to manufacture dehumidifiers. Tra ining of the existing workforce is considered to be more beneficial to the company since it will be able to retain its already existing workforce. Hiring of new workers is also expensive to the company (Mayo 2010). Production will then kick off shortly afterwards. At the beginning, it will be done on a small-scale basis. The company can then gradually increase on its level of production. The amount of units manufactured within a given duration of time will depend on the ability of the marketing department to ensure that those that are produced are adequately distributed and promoted. As such, close collaboration will be required between the production and the marketing department while making decisions on the level of production (Roberts 2011). Once the implementation of the project has kicked off, the team will proceed to the next stage which is control. Once the project has become operational, it is important that the team carries out a number of activities aimed at improving on t he efficiency of production (Benyus 2009). It is important to note that the entry into the new market involves a great deal of changes for the company. As such, a lot of capital will be required in order for the dehumidifier sector to be fully operational. A lot of costs will also be incurred (Simmons 2002). Good management is therefore paramount. For the new venture to be of economic value, the revenues generated must exceed the costs. It is important for the project team to therefore track revenues and costs (Fuad-Luke 2009). The evaluation will be done by the finance department and report tabled to the board of directors as an indication of the companyââ¬â¢s progress. The members of staff who are working in the new sector will also be monitored closely to ensure that they are in a position to steer production in the right direction. Once the product is already in the market, it will be important to monitor the response of customers to the introduction of the new dehumidifiers. The main purpose of the monitoring of the customer service issues will be to ensure that the product fully satisfies the needs of the customers (Tavares, Cardoso Dias 2010). The team will then be required to hold the project status meeting with the main aim being to brief the board on the progress that has been achieved. The team will also be required to monitor the progress of the new sector and identify potential risk areas. Mitigation measures will therefore need to be put in place. Once the project is running smoothly, the final stage of the execution process, closure will start. During closure, it will be important for the project team to conduct an audit. The project manager will be required to work in collaboration with the head of the finance department in order to ensure that an auditor is availed to the project team (Usero Fernandez 2009). The team will also be required to document all the progress that has been achieved during the execution process. Lessons learn are a lso to be documented. The documentation process will help the company achieve sustainability in the new sector since all the strengths and weaknesses of the company in regard to the new sector will be known. Documentation also allows for future reference. It is believed that documents are also an important decision making tool. The records will be constantly updated as new information surfaces. The project will by then have gained formal acceptance within all departments in the company (Tomovic 2009). The board of directors will also have formally identified the newly created sector as one of its divisions. Funding for the maintenance of the dehumidifier manufacturing will therefore be often allocated. As such, the manufacture of the dehumidifiers will be given special attention just like that of refrigeration appliances. All records are also to be stored safely in the companyââ¬â¢s achieves to ensure that they are safe and can be easily retrieved in case they are needed in futur e. A timescale will also be included in the project plan to ensure that a specific schedule is adhered to (Tomovic 2009). The timescale will also be an indication of the progress that has been achieved. It will also form a basis for the evaluation of the teamââ¬â¢s success (Lefteri 2006). The timescales are not to be changed unless there is when it is considered to be very necessary for the team. The timescale is as follows. The project is to commence on the 1st of September 2014. The project team will only be required to work within the normal working days, Monday to Friday. The plan will also provide allowances for a few days to prevent the team from lagging behind schedule. The schedule is presented below: Table 1: Schedule D Task Name Levelling Delay Duration Start Finish Resources 1 Initiation 0 Days 0 days Mon1/9/14 Mon 1/9/14 2 Evaluation Recommendations 0 Days 1 day Wen 3/9/14 Wen 3/9/14 3 Develop project charter 0 Days 2 day Thurs 4/9/14 Friday 5/9/14 Project Team 4 Deliverable: Submit Project Charter to the board of directors 0 Days 0.3 days Mon 8/9/14 Mon 8/9/14 Project Team 5 Project Sponsors (The board of directors, through the finance department) Reviews Project Charter 0 Days 1 days Tue 9/9/14 Tue 9/9/14 Sponsor 6 Project Charter Signed/ Approved 0 Days 0.3 days Wen 10/9/14 Wen 10/9/14 Sponsor 7 Planning 0 Days 1 day Thurs 11/9/14 Thurs 11/9/14 Project Team 8 Creating Scope Statement 0 Days 1 day Friday 12/9/14 Friday 12/9/14 Project Team 9 Determining Project Team 0 Days 1 day Mon 15/9/14 Mon 15/9/14 Project Manager 10 Project Team Kickoff Meeting 0 Days 1 day Thurs 18/9/14 Thurs 18/9/14 Project Team 11 Develop Project Plan 0 Days 1 day Friday 19/9/14 Friday 19/9/14 Project Team 12 Subject Project Plan to Evaluation 0 Days 1 day Fri 20/9/14 Fri 20/9/14 Project Team 13 Project Plan Approved 0 Days 0.3 days Tue 23/9/14 Tue 23/9/14 Project Team 14 Execution 0 Days 0 days Tue 23/9/14 Tue 23/9/14 15 Project Ki ckoff Meeting 0 Days 1 day Thurs 25/9/14 Thurs 25/9/14 Project Team 16 Initiate the Procurement process. 0 Days 3 weeks Mon 29/9/14 Friday 17/10/14 Project Team 17 Making Installations 0 Days 5 Months Mon 20/10/14 Friday 20/3/15 18 Training Staff 0 Days 2 weeks Mon 23/3/15 Fri 3/4/15 Project Team 19 Funding from the Finance Department 0 Days 0.3 days Mon 6/4/15 Mon 6/4/15 Project Team 20 Production of Dehumidifiers commences 0 Days 0.1 days Mon 6/4/15 Mon 6/4/15 Project Team 21 Distribution of the Dehumidifiers 0 Days 0.05 days Mon 6/4/15 Mon 6/4/15 22 Commencement of Product Promotion of the Dehumidifiers 0 Days 0.05 days Mon 6/4/15 Mon 6/4/15 23 Control 0 Days 0 days Mon 13/4/15 Mon 13/4/15 24 Project Management 0 Days 0 days Mon 13/4/15 Mon 13/4/15 Project Manager 25 Revenue Cost Tracking 0 Days 2 days Wen 15/4/15 Thurs 16/4/15 Project Team 26 Staff Monitoring 0 Days 2 days Mon 20/4/15 Tue 21/4/15 Project Team 27 Customer Services Issues 0 Days 1 day Wen 22/4/15 Wen 22/4/15 Project Team 28 Project Status Meeting 0 Days 1 day Fri 24/4/15 Fri 24/4/15 Project Team 29 Risk Management 0 Days 2 days Mon 27/4/15 Tue 28/4/15 Project Team 30 Monitoring and Mitigation Measures 0 Days 0.05 days Wen 29/4/15 Wen 29/4/15 Project Team 31 Closure 0 Days 0.1 days Wen 29/4/15 Wen 29/4/15 32 Audit 0 Days 2 days Mon 4/5/15 Tue 5/5/15 33 Document Lessons Learned 0 Days 0.5 days Thurs 7/5/15 Thurs 7/5/15 Project Team 34 Update records and files 0 Days 3 days Mon 11/5/15 Wen 13/5/15 Project Team 35 Gain Formal Acceptance 0 Days 2 days Thurs 14/5/15 Friday 15/5/15 36 Record and Store Data Safely 0 Days 1 day Mon 18/5/15 Mon 18/5/15 Project Team Production Production refers to the process in which various inputs, both material and immaterial, are handled to come up with the desired output. Production can also refer to economic means through which human wants are satisfied resulting from the consumption of the commodities produce d (Chary 2009). In this case, the dehumidifiers produced should have the ability to improve the well being of the customers. As such, the company should put in place measures to improve on the efficiency of the appliance. However, it should consider the current regulations touching on the manufacture of such appliances (Kelley Littman 2006). Rules set aside by regulatory agencies should also be adhered to. Since dehumidifiers use refrigeration gas, their manufacture is regulated by organisations that seek to reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses. Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a multi trillion organisation that seeks to expose the levels of greenhouse emissions emanating from some of the worldââ¬â¢s largest corporate. The aim of the organisation is to ensure that corporate are socially responsible and adhere to environmental conservation calls (Zheng Possel-Dolken 2002). In order for the company to succeed in the new market, corporate social responsibility is of great im portance (Salkeld 2011). There are five CDP programs, investor CDP, CDP public procurement, CDP water disclosure, CDP supply chain, and CDP cities. Investor CDP helps investors move to economies with lower carbon emission. The company wishing to enter the dehumidifier market must be viewed to be environmental friendly to be allowed to expand its operations in foreign jurisdictions (Kalb 1992). Based on CDP public procurement program, governments are able to identify corporate that are not environmental friendly. It will therefore be in the best interest of the company to abide to the set regulations. CDP water disclosure encourages corporate to use water in a manner that is sustainable. Dehumidifiers are used to extract water from the atmosphere. The water must then be discarded after the collecting container has been filled up. The water should be disposed in a responsible manner to prevent pollution. CDP supply chain advocates for collective purchasing to reduce wastage of power a nd resources (Yim 2007). The company wishing to enter the dehumidifier market can use these avenues to obtain inputs and distribute outputs in a cost effective and environmental friendly manner. The CDP cities program help provide data about emissions in major urban areas in a standardised manner (Brown Katz 2009). Cities with higher emissions discourage the entry into markets associated with high emissions. The information is vital for a company seeking to enter the dehumidifier market since it is associated with the emission of high levels of greenhouse gasses (Bellgran Safsten 2010). Product Realisation in the Market Product realisation refers to the attainment of the product that is sought by a business. The term is also used to refer to the process that a firm needs to undergo in order to produce their final product. For the case of the company, product realisation will be the successful manufacture of the dehumidifier appliances (Poli 2001). For the company to successfully a chieve their set goal, manufacture of the dehumidifiers, they must first adequately prepare for it. The company must first evaluate the market that they wish to enter (Chakravarthy 2001). Evaluation of the market helps a business to have a clear understanding of the market and its aspects, such as customer characteristics, competitors, and the nature of the market. It is also important to formulate an action plan in order to ensure that the working of the team is systematic (Demeyer, Pich Loch 2013). Timelines must also be indicated in order to guide the process. In most cases, proposals are also prepared in order to give the stakeholders a clear picture of the work that is ahead of them (McDonough Braungart 2002). Post Market Launch Checks Post market launch checks are carried out by any given company to check the relevance, attractiveness and the awareness of its brand soon after its launch (Hague 2003). A number of factors affect the position of a given commodity in the market. One of these issues entails the offer. In this case, the success of the company is anchored on a number of elements. The elements include, among others, value for money. Line extensions, re-launches and new developments are some of the major ways that need to be used to improve and consolidate position of the product in the market (Brownell 2010). Reliable and authenticated information about the product market and the new status of the launched brand, including that of the most active competitors are early indicators for a very strategic market planning (Demeyer et al. 2013). The company should focus on the quality of the products. The company needs to apply three main post launch market research instruments to ascertain some of the most important market data (Trott 2005). The three instruments include product quick check, product performance tracking and brand trend monitor (Phillips 2011). For an effective and quick clarification of product success, just before the companyââ¬â ¢s panel data can successfully determine whether or not the product launch is going well, the product quick check procedure gives the company clarity about its product attractiveness and its potential reservations in the market (Stelzner 2011). The company should also use the product performance tracking instrument to aid in understanding some of the major changes in the active market and also in giving the company an idea on the best ways to manage product launch or re-launch process (Funk 2014). Finally, the organisation should keep track of the major developments of its product with regards to awareness among target customers. It is necessary for the company to realise that this approach gives clarity on how the attractiveness of its product is developing (Stratten 2012). Conclusion Dehumidifiers are common household devices. They are used to reduce the levels of humidity in the atmosphere. Following an evaluation carried out by the project manager, it is clear that the dehumidif ier market is viable, especially for companies that deal in refrigeration appliances. Dehumidifiers and refrigerators are similar given that they both use the cooling effect to perform their functions. A company manufacturing refrigeration appliances is well suited for the production of dehumidifiers. However, the management should plan adequately before entering into the new market. They should also formulate an action plan with timelines to be followed. A proposal to act as the blueprint for the real project is also required. Firstly, ensuring that all electrical appliances such as computers, radios, televisions, and lights are switched off when not in use ensures that wastage of energy is minimized. Secondly, it is also important to unplug all electrical appliances from sockets even when they have been switched off to avoid wasting energy. Electrical appliances such as phone and laptop charges can use up energy when left plugged in sockets, even when the sockets are switched off. Thirdly, changing to energy saving bulbs such as LED or fluorescent light bulbs will save a lot of energy compared to using the conventional light bulbs. Fourthly, energy can also be saved when people avoid making use of electronic exercise machines such as treadmills and instead engage in other physical activities such as jogging, walking, riding real bicycles or doing push-ups. Lastly, people can use heavy blankets when it gets cold instead of heating their rooms using e lectrical heaters (Farmer 5). Water conservation can happen when people ensure that taps are properly closed when not in use. Also, ensuring that taps are not dripping or leaking when closed can help save a lot of water that would have otherwise been lost through the trickles that would have dripped for a prolonged period of time. One can put a container under a dripping tap so that the dripping water can be fetched and used later instead of going to waste by simply dripping down the drain. Water can also be conserved when people take shorter showers or avoid filling their bathtubs to the maximum. Those with pools can use pool covers to reduce the amount of evaporation which will require them to refill their pools from time to time when a lot of evaporation has taken place. People can also avoid flushing toilets unnecessarily and only do so when it is really necessary. New York State Labor Law on Social Media Social media affects most aspects of individuals including employees, and therefore, employers must be able to familiarize themselves with the legal ramifications or implications of their use by the employees. New York introduced legislation in 2012 that prohibited employers from delving into the social media account of would-be applicants for the employment opportunities in their firms or employees through the soliciting of social media accounts or requiring them to log into their accounts. New York State labor laws also protect employees from any disciplinary action or their employment from termination on account of activities done in the social media when they are off-duty. It is important to note that the labor law concerning labor law in New York is written in broad terms to prohibit the employers from discriminating against employees or job applicants for their lawful engagement in social media during non-working hours and outside the premises of the employer, though the engagement in social media may seem contrary to the employerââ¬â¢s interests, practices and policies. The New York Labor Law Section 201-d (2) (c) prohibits the discrimination of an employee for his participation in legal recreational activities outside the working hours and the recreational activities are defined as any lawful activity done at the leisure time for which an employee is not compensated but the employee only engages in it for recreational purposes.1 This section however has not adequately addressed whether social networking can be grouped as a recreational activity, and therefore an employee who engages in an activity that goes contrary to the business interest of the company wil l only be prosecuted by the courts on a case-by-case basis.2 New York State Labor Law on Gender Expression New York has enacted different legislation that protects employees who may suffer from the decisions of their employers due to discrimination based on gender. The labor laws of this state prohibits any employer from having considerations based on your gender at the time of hiring, promoting, transferring, setting wages or hours of work, or when firing any employee from duty. The prohibition against discrimination based on gender is enshrined in Title VII which is a federal law in New York State. This also covers sex discrimination against female employees that may arise from practices or policies that affect the female employees in a negative manner because of pregnancy, child birth and other medical conditions that usually affect females only. The New York State Human Rights Law also expressly prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy,3 and the Equal Pay Act is a federal law of New York State that requires that employers remunerate men and women equal pay for equal work done within the same or similar establishment.4 Two job descriptions can be deemed to be similar or the same if and when each job requires the same skills and Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546064864829528918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401484121977515863.post-73241026177082406732020-01-27T22:23:00.001-08:002020-01-27T22:23:07.172-08:00Content-based Image Retrieval With Ant Colony OptimizationContent-based Image Retrieval With Ant Colony Optimization Content-based image retrieval with skin tones and shapes using Ant colony optimization Introduction: Due to the enormous pool of image data, a plenty of data to be sort out has lead the way for analyzing and dig up the data to acquire likely worthwhile information. Heterogeneous fields cover from commercial to military desire to inspect data in a systematic and quick manner. Outstandingly in the area of interactive media, images have the stronghold. There is no sufficient tools are available for examination of images. One of the points at issue is the effective pinpointing of features in the likeness and the other one is extracting them. NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF RESEACH PROBLEM Current techniques in image retrieval and classification concentrate on content-based techniques. It seek survey the contents of the image rather than thedata about datasuch as keywords, label or properties corresponding with the image. The term content refer to shades, appearance, textures, or any other particulars that can be obtained from the image itself. CBIR with skin tones is advisable because most net-based image search engines rely purely on metadata and this turn out a lot of waste in the results. Thus a system that can sifter images rest on their content with additional property i.e., skin tone would serve better list and return more specific outcomes. Various systems like the QBIC, Retrieval Ware and Photo Book etc., have a variety of attributes, still used in distinct discipline. The color features integrated with shape for classification, the color and texture for retrieval. There is no single feature which is ample; and, moreover, a single representation of characterist ics is also not enough. Sonith et al.[1996] describes a fully automated content ââ¬â based image query systems. Ioloni et al. [1998] describes image retrieval by color semantics with incomplete knowledge. Mori et al. [1999] have applied dynamic programming technique for function approximated shape representation. Chang et al. [2001] describes information driven framework for image. Mira et al. [2002] describes fact content based image retrieval using Qusi ââ¬â Gabir filler Vincent et al. [2007] have developed a fully automated content based image query system. Heraw et al. [2008] describes image retrieval will an enhanced multi modeling ontology. Taba et al. [2009] have used mining association rules for the feature matrin. OBJECTIVES Moreover, speed changes in industry and databases influencing our view and understanding of the problem over time and demanding alter in problem decoding approach. Consequently, further research is required in this field to develop algorithms for pick out images with skin tone and shapes, able to cope with ongoing technological changes. Investigation of effective images with skin tone and shapes based on pixel algorithms Extracting them based on optimization algorithms. Developing computational algorithms in extracting the images. The main objective is to study the Image Identification and Optimistic method of Image Extraction for Image Mining using Ant colony optimization .ACO, good solutions to a given optimization problem. To achieve this main objective, the goals are formulated as follows: To Study the Image Mining Techniques. To Explore the Approaches used in Selecting the Images To Explore the Extracting of the Features. To apply the powerful Techniques. To Analyze the Experimental Results. To Study the Optimization Techniques. To bring down calculation and taking out time. Work Plan: I will begin my research work by investigating different methodologies available in the literature and measure their applicability in different perspectives for common benefit. After that, I prefer to limit my research interest down from general to even more specific under the guidance of designated supervisor in the course so that it fits into university doctoral program curriculum. The research tasks are grouped year wise as follows. Year-1: Literature survey on various methods to get an idea of pattern matching, shapes and classification. I have met a person with a disorder, but they are unaware that they have this disorder. This person is a child and he can not speak. I have also experienced a feeling I have never had before. As a speech pathology major, I decided to join a club geared towards speech production and I knew I wanted to work with children. As I was climbing the stairs to my phonetics class, I saw a flyer for N.S.S.L.H.A. (National Student Speech Language Hearing Association). The flyer stated that the organization was only for people who were majoring in Communication and Science Disorders. But it said nothing about what the club did. Out of curiosity, I went to the first meeting on September 18th. I found out that the people in the organization help children and sometimes elderly people with speech problems. The first activity I did with N.S.S.L.H.A. was attending a book reading at Barnes and Noble. I was the first reader of the year and I was so excited because I love to do activities with children. I read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie to 15 children and their parents. I was actually also nervous because I wanted to do a good job. When I saw the kids that had come to hear me read I became so nervous that I made mistakes reading a childrenââ¬â¢s book. Even though this was a big deal to me, I had no idea of what was to come. I found out that the following weekend was a Flagstaff Family Day. This day was dedicated towards early intervention awareness. So when I arrived there I saw that most of the children were impaired somehow. Some of the children couldnââ¬â¢t pronounce certain letters, but there was one little boy named Jason who couldnââ¬â¢t talk at all. I decided to spend time with him because I had never spent time with a child like him before. Jason is about three years old and I was amazed by him. Since he is so young he doesnââ¬â¢t quite know that he has a speech disorder. I was making crafts with him; stuff like paper tambourines and masks. In 1992, Ron Fricke released the film Baraka, a film with no dialogue, and an inspiring soundtrack played over provocative scenes, typically comparing natural humans in their habitat to human damage and crowding. In two scenes, a big, dirty apartment complex is shown in contrast to a large, unclean cemetery, creating juxtaposition between the two. In the first scene, there are numerous buildings, showing that as the world population increases, conditions worsen as humans fight for space. The Kowloon walled city has a twisting series of stairways, alleys, and cat walks. These buildings, wrapped around an old military fort, are all at least 10 stories high, and dotted with clothes lines, water barrels and trash. The site was evicted and demolished in 1992. In the distance, a bustling city pays no attention to the stained, dirty concrete buildings, where 33,000 occupants face daily poverty in 250 square foot apartments. What is the result of such overcrowding? The industrial revolution of the 19th century showed us the answer. A substantial amount of residents lived around the factories, to shorten their commute. As population density increased, conditions soon became deplorable. To solve this problem, 19th century leaders introduced public transportation, which spread people out, and created a sustainable environment. In a following scene, the camera pans out to La Ciudad Blanca, Ecuador, an enormous grave yard, with multi level complexes of dirty white graves. Each grave has a personal adornment, from their loved ones. From candles to pictures, the decorations make every box look a little more humanized. It is strangely beautiful, with the messages and the grass growing through cracks in the pavement. This scene shows that as a world, when we get overcrowded, we must overcrowd other aspects of life. This really shows that death is a part of life as life is a part of death. These two juxtaposed scenes show how overcrowding is an issue and itââ¬â¢s hard to put a face on a statistic. The idea of putting a huge city and a huge cemetery together makes a point, that the present city solution has been adopted in cemeteries. The cycle of poverty comes into play, when so many are trapped in one place, with no room to improve; they end up in the same spot after life, and leave their children in the same rut. This idea was explored in Sandra Cisnerosââ¬â¢s book, The House on Mango Street, where Esperanza realizes the only way out of the cycle is through hard work and higher education. The film Baraka teaches us many lessons, including the fact of overcrowding, and the harm it has caused, and will cause. In the walled city, thousands of people went without basic sanitation, and lived in 250 square feet or less, often working all day to provide for there families. When trapped in this cycle, you will end up in the same state of poverty as you were in during life. Hard work is the key of success and getting out of poverty. The body is the physical part of the body that is only concerned with the material world, and through which we are able to experience the world we live in. it wants to experience self-gratification. It is mortal, and when it dies, it is truly dead. The mind is directed towards the heavenly realm of Ideas, and is immortal. It is with our minds that we are able to understand the eternal world of the Forms. When it dies it returns to the realm of Ideas. The soul is the driving force of the body, that it is what gives us our identity. Plato likensâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The body and the inclinations are mortal but transmigrate into animals, but the intellect is immortal. He believes that the intellect represents the most divine part of the soul, and so after death it leaves the inferior physical body to join the world of Ideas. B: Platos dualism was a combination of the key ideas from both Materialism and Idealism. His theory that we had both a physical body, and a soul/mind and that the soul/mind is a thinking being, complete in itself, and capable of living without the body. A strength of Platos Dualism is that it says there is more to living than just what we are always aware of, as just because the physical world seems hard, there are other ways of living. Another strength is that he doesnt deny the existence of the physical world as an idealist might, but just says that the physical world isnt as importance, that we should be seeking to understand the world of Forms. Neither does he deny the spiritual world, and says that its important, so if we can understand the world of Ideas then we can understand Good. Aristotle, Platos pupil, was one of the sources of his greatest opposition. He argues that Platos definition of the soul is wrong, that it isnt immortal, but rather it is just the life force of the body. Ergo, when the body dies, so does the soul. One of Platos claims is that the body doesntShow MoreRelatedDistinctions and Comparisons between Aristotle and Plato Essay1681 Words à |à 7 Pageson certain factors of their philosophy. Answer: Negligence The tort of negligence arises when a person does something, which a reasonable man under similar circumstances would not do, or omits to do something, which a reasonable man under similar circumstances would do, and such commission or omission results in the damage to some other person (LII / Legal Information Institute 2016). Essentials of Negligence The essentials of the tort of negligence are as follows: The defendant must have a duty of care towards the plaintiff. The defendant must have breached that duty. The breach must have resulted in some damage to the plaintiff. Facts of the instant problem The Company, Oleocampo, is one of the leading producers of fine quality olive oil in the region of Koala Island. The Company supplies olive oil to various food producers and is considered to be the pride of Koala Island. The celebrity chefs use Olecampos olive oil in their restaurants and television shows. George Michael is the owner of the company and he has olive groves in a region in Koala Island. Andrew Ridgeley owns a farm, which is situated, just adjacent to Michaels olive groves. He does periodical aerial spraying on his farm. One day his new pilot, by mistake, sprays chemical pesticides on Michaels olive groves. This had a devastating effect on the olive groves and the Company fails to produce the fine quality olive oil for an entire year. The Company lays off 25% of its staff in order to minimise its cost. As a result, Julie, who was an employee of the Company, loses her job and is unable to repay her mortgage amount. Not only that, Wyatt Marlston, a celebrity chef, who runs a famous cooking show on television and is one of the prime customers of Oleacampo, suffers a heart attack and is admitted to ICU of Royal Adelaide Hospital. Upon seeing him in ICU, his wife, Maggie Marlston suffers trauma. Issues: Whether Oleocampo and Julie have a right to sue Ridgeley for negligence or not? Whether Maggie, in a suit of negligence, will be successful in claiming compensation from Ridgeley due to her suffering from psychological trauma or not? Issue 1 (Advice to Oleocampo and Julie) Application of the elements of negligence Duty of care Ridgeley undoubtedly owes a duty of care to the adjacent olive groves of Oleocampo. The olive groves are the main source of production of the finest olive oil for the Company. The right of the Company over its property is a right in rem. Every right has a correlative duty and the world at large has a duty not to interfere with the possession of the Companys property. In the case of Donoghue vs. Stevenson (1932), a snail was found in a ginger beer bottle. The consumption of the same caused damage to the plaintiff. The manufacturer of beer bottle was held guilty of negligence, as the manufacturer had breached the duty of care to the consumers, which resulted in damage to the plaintiff (French 2012). Breach of duty The pilot employed by Ridgeley in his farm applied chemical pesticide to the olive groves of Oleocampo. The pilot was a new one and was not given proper instruction to take care of the adjacent property. He was not informed about the exact area in which he needed to do the spraying. Ridgeley failed to follow the standard of care, which was required to be followed. Thus, the act of aerial spraying by Ridgeleys farm on the Companys olive groves resulted in a breach of duty. In Caparo Industries Plc vs. Dickman (1990) case,a test was laid down so as to establish the liability of the wrongdoer (Randell 2014). The test is known as Capro test under which a claimant has to establish: That a reasonable man could have foreseen the damage There existed a relationship of proximity The duty of care could be imposed fairly and reasonably. All the requirements in the Capro test have been fulfilled in the instant problem and Ridgeley has done a breach of duty. Damage resulting from breach of duty The damage, which resulted from the breach of duty, is plentiful. The immediate damage, which occurred, is the deterioration of the equality of olive oil that the Company used to produce and for which the Company was considered the pride of Koala Island. The Company, thereafter, had to reduce its staff and consequently Julie lost her job and failed to make her mortgage repayments. The celebrity chef suffered from a heart attack and his wife, Maggie went through trauma. All these are the damage caused because of the breach of duty by Ridgeleys farm. In Donoghue case, the plaintiff suffered damage due to the consumption of the beer and therefore was entitled to recover damages from the defendant (Dobson 2015). In the instant problem, all the requirements of negligence have been fulfilled and both Oleocampo and Julie have suffered proximate damage and therefore have the right to sue Ridgeley for negligence. Issue 2 (Advice to Maggie) Proximate and Remote damage A person is entitled to recover damages only for the proximate damage caused by the negligent act and not for any remote damage, which could not be foreseen by a reasonable man. In Wagon Mound (1961) case, the defendants ship was taking fuel from the Sydney Port. Some 600 feet away there was a Morts Dock Company, which did repairing and welding work. Due to the negligence of the defendants servants, oil was spilt on the water, it was carried with the water until it reached the Morts Dock Company, where it ignited with the cotton waste, and a fire broke out immediately and resulted in damage to the Morts Dock Company (Ayers 2013). In this case, the Court held that the defendant could not be held liable for any damage, which could not be reasonably foreseen by a prudent person under similar circumstance (Zipursky 2012). In the instant problem, the harm or damage, which Maggie Marlston suffered, is too remote a damage and could not have been reasonably foreseen. For such damage, Ridgeley cannot be held liable and Maggie would fail in an action to claim compensation for the same. The statement to be analysed is ââ¬Å"Change is inevitable. Organizations have to adapt their HRM activities between short-run responsiveness and long-run agility, which can result in tensions between employers and employees.â⬠To accomplish this task, a critical discussion of issues concerning organizational flexibility as argued by Atkinsonââ¬â¢s in the flexible model and Dyer and Shaferââ¬â¢s agility model providing a thorough analysis of available empirical evidence will be done. It is no doubt that the human or employees in a given organization is deemed to be the most important assets. When their different potentials are tapped successfully, firm can attain competitive advantage over its competitors. Literature Review Atkinsonââ¬â¢s Flexible Model This model tries to address the rigidities linked to rules of employment established under the scientific organization design. Atkinson (1984) stresses the importance of organizational flexibility. The researcher notes that this is one of the ways to remain competitive, i.e. successful in the contemporary business world. Organizations should be able to comply with new rules and principles of the business world. Atkinsonââ¬â¢s model is based on four major types of flexibility: external and internal numerical flexibility, functi onal flexibility and financial flexibility. Thus, the researcher notes that external numerical flexibility can help organizations fit the changing business environment. Thus, organizations can hire employees from external markets. Organizations can hire employees to fulfil specific tasks. Thus, the researcher notes that short-term contracts can make organizations more flexible. Basically, Atkinson (1984) claims that temporary workers should not be underestimated. This kind of flexibility will encourage (part-time as well as fulltime) workers to fulfil tasks properly. Internal numerical flexibility presupposes flexibility of employeesââ¬â¢ working time. Thus, some workers can work part-time. Atkinson (1984) suggests that organizations can make use of shifts. This flexibility will encourage workers to manage their time properly and try their best to fulfil their tasks. This flexibility can motivate employees as they will be able to combine their work and their family life, which is very important.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Of course, this type of flexibility enables organizations to operate seven days a week 24 hours a day. This will definitely keep organizations competitive. Functional flexibility is also very important as it helps the organization be competitive. This type of flexibility concerns employeeââ¬â¢s ability to fulfil various types of tasks, work in different teams, function in different situations, etc. Atkinson (1984) notes that employees should be ready to implement various activities and take part in different projects. Workers should be ready to cooperate with each other and form different teams to fulfil a variety o f tasks. The researcher adds that this can be possible if organization pays enough attention to education and training. Thus, the researcher notes that organizations should launch various educational courses to make their employees flexible. This flexibility contributes greatly to the overall organizationââ¬â¢s flexibility. Finally, Atkinson (1984) singles out financial flexibility which is also very important. This component of Atkinsonââ¬â¢s model presupposes various types of rewards for appropriate or exceptional performance. The researcher mentions that performance assessment activities should be held. Employees should be aware of the assessment system as this will encourage them to perform better. Organizations can reward individual employees or teams. In fact, Atkinson (1984) states that employees should be paid (not only rewarded) in accordance with their individual or group work. This keeps employees motivated. Dyer and Shaferââ¬â¢s Agility Model As far as Dyer and Shaferââ¬â¢s agility model is concerned, it is necessary to note that it has a lot in common with Atkinsonââ¬â¢s model. Dyer and Shaferââ¬â¢s model presupposes companiesââ¬â¢ rapid adjustment to changing business environments (Dyer Shafer 1999). Organizational agility model can be divided into several basic principles. In the first place, the researchers state that organizations will benefit from organizational agility which is essential in the contemporary business world. Admittedly, organizations should focus on achieving the necessary level of agility to remain competitive in the business environment (Boxall et al. 2003). Of course, understanding of the necessity to be competitive is not enough. Organizations should take certain steps to achieve agility.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Managing people specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More First of all, organization should be able to understand potent ial of existing and upcoming markets (Dyer Shafer 1999). It is important to understand the needs of these markets. The organization should be able to respond to changes which are taking place or are about to take place. Of course, the organization should also be able to ââ¬Ëopen upââ¬â¢ new markets. Dyer and Shafer (1999) claim that it is impossible to see various changes in business environment without proper training. Therefore, organizations should train the staff. Employees should learn constantly. Trainings, discussions, experiments, workshops and conferences should be held to train the staff. Employees should share successful experience and cooperate to work out new ways to run business. Apart from training, it is essential to create the necessary environment to encourage employees (Dyer Shafer 1999). Employees should be encourages to display initiative. The researchers note that employees should be ready to work in teams. Notably, employees should be ready to work in different teams depending on the goal pursued (Dyer Shafer 1999). Basically, employees should be ready to effectively collaborate with each other. The researchers also note that employees should be goal-oriented. It is crucial to make employees aware of the goals the organization pursues. In other words, the staff should know the plan they can follow. It makes employees more motivated as they know where they are moving. Furthermore, employees should know and share the organizationââ¬â¢s values. This will make the organization a single team which operates as a whole. Besides, Dyer and Shafer (1999) claim that organizations should exploit flexible work design. In essence, this is one of the most important measures which can help an organization achieve agility. The researchers also stress that proper communication is extremely important. On one hand, communication should be extensive. Employees should be aware of the processes which are taking place. Flexible working conditions ar e also crucial for the organizationââ¬â¢s agility. Some employees can perform certain tasks better when certain flexibility is available. Finally, Dyer and Shafer (1999) state that employees should be awarded properly. The researchers note that bonuses and rewards for certain performance or productivity level should be implemented.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! The researchers also note that appraisal and feedback are crucial to create the necessary environment at workplace. Employees should understand that their performance is evaluated. Employees should understand that some ways can be awarded while certain behaviour can be punished. Applications Since its foundation in 1998, the Bank of America has grown to be the third largest bank in the world. It managed to expand its operation to more than 150 countries. However, financial crisis and stiff competition from major competitors such as Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup has completely changed everything for a bank that enjoys a 99.0% relationship with Americans. To ensure that the Bank remain competitive, the management decided to adopt a set of three strategies which included initiating new services and products, adapting to new changes and delivering high quality services and products to clients. It is no doubt that the bank through initiating new product and services, it realized that this can only be possible if it forms mergers, acquire competitors and actively engage in joint ventures (Dyer Shafer 1999). For instance in 2008, the firm acquired Merrill Lynch which later made the Bank of America the largest bank in terms of wealth management. This came with some challenges and tension among employees particularly about their job security. In order to succeed in implementing the three approaches, it was deemed fit to redefine employeesââ¬â¢ behaviours. Thus there were some agile attributes that were developed. The first one was to have a dedicated team of employees. The purpose of this was to ensure that workers were to be totally committed to the success of the bank. Workers were to identify with the bank instead of their department and a personal commitment based on the sense of perceived mutual advantage (Dyer Shafer 1999). Accountability was another agile attributed to be natured by the human resource department. Workers were to be responsible of their actions while engaging in activities to help the firm attain its goals and objectives. The concept of generative was also encouraged. This was deemed to help the bank approach issues at a different angle and more effectively. Lastly workers were to be resilient, that is they should accept and take change positively. This could be demonstrated by their ability to take on calculated risks (Connor, Lake Stackman 2003). It is necessary to note that the Bank of America has exploited Atkinsonââ¬â¢s flexible model as well. This resulted in placing all knowledge of the assignment with the management (Denhardt Denhardt 2006). This resulted in negative consequences such as less motivated and satisfied employees which later impacted on the productivity. The concept of flexibility was deemed to help remove rigidity created by the rules. Currently the bank has a workforce who are highly skilled are capable of partici pating in making rational decisions (Hughes 2007). There are three kinds of flexibility which bank of America has strived to attain. One is functional flexibility, this is where the managements is allowed to move employees around jobs as the need arise. However, it is worth noting that since the bank is a place with high level of specialization, the Bank of America has not fully managed to ensure all employees are moved between jobs. Before employees are moved between jobs, the bank carryout an extensive education and training programs, this later has been shown to reflect on product requirement instead of the traditional way of doing business. It is worth mentioning that although some workers support this strategy, there are some who find it very difficult to move out of their usual work stations. Concerning financial flexibility, this usually makes it possible for the firm to evaluate the cost of labour to reflect on the supply of as well as demand for labour. As a result compensa tion package fluctuates based on the market worth of any given labour requirement. Lastly numerical flexibility helps the management to match the needs for employees with the number employed usually attained by using different short-term employment arrangements such as part-time employment, short contracts, contracting and outsourcing. When Bank of America adopted this strategy, other employees begun getting worried and some actually left since they were convinced that the future of the bank was doomed. Of course, rumours can be really serious issue to be solved. As suggested by Bordia et al. (2006) rumours are verbal symbols and expressions of employees concerns and come about before formal announcement and it usually centres on predicting change and alleging its dire consequences. One of the most effective ways to address the problem is to issue official reports, and other documents. Conclusion From the review of managing people in the Bank of America, it is evident that the human resource is an important asset that gets everything rolling. Since change is inevitable, employees tend to be affected by change. Thus organizations have to adapt their human resource management activities between short-term and long-term responsiveness and agility in that order. This can result in tension between employers and employees. For instance when the bank acquired one of its competitors, some workers were worried of losing their jobs. However, to curb such tension, there is need to effectively communicate in an open manner and engage workers from the beginning to the end of the change process. New York by Gas-Light has one critical redeeming value: George Foster had a magnificent subject that had largely been unexploited by other journalists in his day: New York City.à New York had grown at an breakneck pace, becoming in just a few decades the first true American metropolis.à At the same time, Americansââ¬â¢ appetite to know about this strange, somewhat sordid place had also grown, and Foster was entirely willing to satisfy the publicââ¬â¢s desire to know.à Reading through his fifteen sketches, one finds descriptions intended to arouse and perhaps to shock his readers, but there is no serious call to clean up the vice of the city. Consider a few examples: female prostitution is invariably the result of manââ¬â¢s individual villainy in seducing and betraying the pure being who trusts her destiny to his keeping ââ¬â or of the monstrous crime of society which dooms its daughters to degradation, want and misery from which no virtuous effort of theirs can ever rescue them.à Let society heed this one simply truth, and apply a thorough and efficient remedy, by furnishing the means of comfortable and happy existence to women who would be virtuous and exclude from its presence all men who are guilty of seduction or libertinism, or who have trifled with the sacred affection of woman, in any form.à The nine-tenths of all crime and suffering will be at once abolished from the face of the earth.à But this is something to be prayed fro rather than hoped for. Indeed, given the prominence that Foster attained through his writing, one wonders how fervently he prayed that these conditions end.à Describing ââ¬Å"Five Points,â⬠he waxes eloquent: This is indeed a sad sight, an awful sight a sight to make the blood slowly congeal and the heart to grow fearful and cease its beatings.à Here, whence these streets diverge in dark and endless paths, whose steps take hold on hell here is the very type and physical semblance, in fact, of hell itself. Foster gives no suggestion that he want to remedy the vices he found in such places as Five Points.à Given the success that he enjoyed with New York by Gas-Light, it seems unlikely he did. New York by Gas-Light is not entirely accurate.à Foster took a number of journalistic liberties in his writing, but it can still be classified as non-fiction.à That cannot be said of Awful Disclosures, which was a calculated fraud.à Maria Monk was never a nun and was never in the Hotel Dieu Nunnery.à Monk had suffered a brain injury as a child, and she apparently could not differentiate between reality and elaborate fictions.à She collaborated with several vehemently anti-Catholic Protestant ministers, to produce a book that described the nunnery in Montreal as an elaborate prison in which nuns were held as slaves for priests. While there is the absence of explicit details about sex acts that might be expected for a piece of this period, there are many details of sadistic punishments meted out against nuns for the slightest resistance.à Infanticide is described in some detail, this being the supposed means of disposing of any accidental children born of the liaisons of the lascivious priests with their sexual servitors. (Monk, 99-101, 128)à Bondage and gagging are described as punishments. (Monk, 105-06, 114-15)à In a remarkably cold scene, she describes the murder of a nun and the dumping of her body into a lime pit. (Monk, 59-65) While Foster wrote New York by Gas-Light as a profit-making venture, the purpose for creating the elaborate hoax of Awful Disclosures is more devious.à The book was created as an attack on Catholicism.à In the 1830s, nativist Protestants felt themselves threatened by Catholicism.à To counter this, and following the literary success of Six Months in a Convent in 1832, Maria Monkââ¬â¢s backers created their pseudo-pornographic account of life in a Montreal nunnery.à The book has since been exposed as completely fictional.à An investigator who was enter the Hotel Dieu Nunnery reported that Maria Monkââ¬â¢s description of the arrangement of the rooms (Monk, 35-40) was hopelessly inaccurate. (Schultz, xv-xix)à As inquiries continued, it was discovered that Maria Monk had never been a nun, had apparently been confined for a considerable time to an asylum, and was a common prostitute rather than the victim of priestly sexual abuse.à Nevertheless, Awful Disclosures remained a remarkable bestseller for many years. If you know you could get twice as much done if only you could write faster, try some of the following methods. Donââ¬â¢t worry about the quality of your first draft Whether youââ¬â¢re writing fiction or non-fiction, many experts recommend just getting the first draft done before starting to edit. That means keeping the momentum going as you write, rather than going back to change words or delete sentences. If youââ¬â¢re a perfectionist and write slowly because you worry about getting every little detail right the first time round, giving yourself the freedom to produce a ââ¬Å"rubbish first draftâ⬠can triple your writing speed. Once youââ¬â¢re done, go back and edit: often, youââ¬â¢ll be surprised that your first draft really isnââ¬â¢t too bad! In his book Do It Tomorrow (which I strongly recommend for anyone who struggles to manage their time and attention), Mark Forster recommends writing a series of quick drafts: When I first learnt the techniqute of writing in a series of rapid drafts, my first draft would usually consist of nothing more than a few words jotted down. My second draft would add a bit more and I would go on revising it until I had it in the form I wanted. There are two great advantages to doing it this way. First of all it gets rid of the perfectionist feeling that it has to be got right first time. If I think a sentence is a bit clumsy, what does it matter? Thereââ¬â¢ll be another draft along in a moment. The second advantage is that engaging with the material in this way allows new thoughts and insights to appear. Outline the piece before starting With bigger projects, itââ¬â¢s easy to get stuck because youââ¬â¢ve come to a standstill or gone off on a tangent. Jot down some notes before you begin: that might be subheadings for a blog post or article, paragraphs for an essay, or plot points for a short story. Type these onto your computer screen ââ¬â youââ¬â¢ll no longer be staring at a blank document, and seeing the next subheading or paragraph point ahead will help keep you on track. Set a timer for ten minutes and write non-stop until it goes off Have you noticed how much faster you write when you need to finish something before a set time (perhaps lunch, or an essay deadline)? Itââ¬â¢s amazing how much your brain can focus when youââ¬â¢ve only got a few minutes. Mark Forster calls this the ââ¬Å"end effectâ⬠ââ¬â speeding up at the end of a piece of work ââ¬â and recommends using a timer to produce it consistently. Challenge yourself to see how much you can produce in ten minutes. Do your research and preparation separately from the writing Something that can really slow things down is stopping to look up a fact, find a quote, or check a figure. When you write the outline for your piece (see #2), you should have a good idea of what references youââ¬â¢ll need to make. Look these up before you start writing, and have them all to hand. Alternatively, if the process of writing sparks off ideas of websites, books or people you want to refer to, donââ¬â¢t stop to find them part-way through writing the piece. Leave a note in the text to remind yourself of what you want to include; you might want to highlight this in some way so you donââ¬â¢t forget to go back and put it in! For example, in the first draft of this article, I wrote [Quote from Mark Forster on drafting process] and looked it up when I revised the first draft. The same applies if youââ¬â¢re unsure of how to spell a word, or if you canââ¬â¢t quite think of the right phrase: highlight it in some way, and come back to it once the first draft is complete. Turn off distractions (instant messenger, Twitter, email.) If youââ¬â¢re constantly interrupted by friends wanting to chat on instant messenger, by incoming emails, by new posts coming through to your RSS reader ââ¬â turn everything off. I can write at least twice as fast ââ¬â and often even faster ââ¬â without any distractions. You might think it only takes a few seconds to read each message, but every time you turn your attention away from what youââ¬â¢re writing, you lose momentum. Iââ¬â¢m great at procrastinating when I should be writing and so I write most of my blog posts first thing in the morning, before I even connect my computer to the internet. This also helps with #4 ââ¬â Iââ¬â¢m not tempted to stop and search for some missing piece of information on Google every few minutes. Have you got any great tips on speeding up your writing? Thus, the association between the music creation and physical human movement got disrupted through the use of computer that brought a type of non-instrumental composition in addition to the music production functions such as synthesis, recording and sequencing. However, the link between music and physical human movement has once again revived in the realm of computer music due to the use of latest sensors and the evolution of custom interfaces. The real time and highly interactive technologies allow computer music to extend itself to the physical world of human movement and thus, open the gate towards the creation of extremely imaginative alternative musical instruments such as the hyper instruments (HIââ¬â¢s) that were introduced by Tod Machover. Such interactive music systems offer limitless possibilities. Conventional instru ments are highly interactive systems as they respond immediately to a specific physical action with a corresponding musical action. Hyper instruments are directly derived through conventional instruments and therefore, they respect this basic link with traditional instruments. However, hyper instruments revolutionize the functionality of conventional instruments since they fundamentally enhance the two sides of the interaction. Their salary, unlike salary of Western teachers, depends on how well their students study. Another difference is that in China children do not choose subject they can study. They have to study all the subjects the school teaches. Only in high school children are allowed to choose some subjects. In Western education children can choose more subjects ââ¬â they have more freedom in choosing certain specialization. Grades for each subject in China depend mostly on results of tests. While in the Western system assignments completed during each week add to the final grade, tasks that Chinese children do at school do not count to the final grade. The final grade depends on exams. Besides, grades for tests and exams are shown to everybody. As a result every student knows what grades have other students. A teacher then praises students that have good grades and criticized bad students, ties to encourage them to study better. Also the best students get rewards for their excellent grades, even money from school. On contrast, Western schools disclose to a student only his or her grades. In China children spend most of the day at school and evening at extracurricular classes. So those that want to enter a university come home at 9 in the evening. At the same time, western children spend less time studying and have more free Mikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546064864829528918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401484121977515863.post-88183549010221257232019-11-17T11:06:00.001-08:002019-11-17T11:06:03.510-08:00The Rising Price of Food Essay Example for Free The Rising Price of Food Essay Recent years have seen dramatic increases in the world prices for food commodities. The first half of the year 2008 saw the price of rice go up by 50% and generally speaking, similar increases in other food commodities such as maize, soybeans and wheat have been seen across the world, resulting in various forms of panic. In the Philippines, farmers have begun hoarding supplies of rice, while Indonesians have initiated strikes due to soybean shortages. Generally speaking, these food crises have been attributed to the supply and demand factors resulting from meteorological catastrophes, shortages resulting from poor harvests and swelling populations. (BBC 2008; Lewis 2008) Steinberg (2008) reports that from early 2006 to early 2008, the world prices for corn has risen by 125%, rice by 217%, soybeans by 107% and wheat by 136%. Feilden (2008) opines that while foodstuffs have never been cheap to the point of absurdity, the past thirty years have seen a long period of stability that was bound to end following an expanding middle class emerging from rapidly developing nations such as China and India. Feilden asserts that for the most part, the cost of wheat, corn and soya has fallen in real terms, but continuingly volatile climatological conditions, a diversion of agriculture towards the production of biofuel feedstocks and increasingly luxuriant middle class appetites have made this inevitable. Parry, et al (66) have found that based on projections based on the Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES) made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that when population growth and rising levels of carbon emissions are combined they create anthropogenic climate change effects that have a detrimental effect on food production. Simply put, they have a negative effect on simulated crop yields, with greater disparities existing between developed and developing countries. Fortunately, these disparities are such that the shortfalls of developing nations are compensated for by the yields of developed nations which derive a limited benefit from climate change. What is problematic is that because of the complex nature of a globalized food supply, there is little to guarantee that these shortfalls in developing nations will be addressed through distribution. Another problematic causal factor driving the food crisis is the increased demand for value-added food commodities resulting from populations that have improved in class standing. For example, prospering Asian peoples have begun to substitute more basic food commodities with input-intensive or highly processed foods, most notably in their consumption of beef. For every kilogram of beef consumed, a great proportion of grain is used for feed. Other examples of value-added commodities include processed foods that utilize corn oil and high fructose corn syrup. (FAO 4) Richard Manning (35-37) opines that grain-based diets are generally diets for the poor. Thus, as nations prosper, the global food supply is stretched to its limit to accommodate a middle class that is increasing to levels it was never designed to anticipate. Following this chain of thought, recent price increases have come from increased use of food inputs rather than an absolute increase in food consumption. However, as suggested, the expanding middle class plays only a fractional role in the food price crisis. It does not mean that the global South is ultimately getting better. For the more than 2. 5 billion people who live on less than two dollars a day, the rise in food prices is a life or death matter, and as such, many from the worldââ¬â¢s underclasses are turning towards cheaper food commodities as substitutes for increasingly costly equivalents. Faiola (2008) reports that in Mauritania, some have turned towards consuming sorghum in place of bread, whilst others have begun Indians have replaced soybean oil with groundnut oil. In the Philippines, the local Food and Nutrition Research Institute has proposed replacing some of the flour used in producing the staple known as pan de sal with squash puree instead to allow bakeries to keep the price down. The rise in food prices have also been affected by recent developments in global energy. Heinberg (2007) observes that the yields of industrial agriculture are highly dependent on fossil fuel inputs. While innovations such as crop rotation and the usage of manure and compost help reduce instances of famine, it is the use of fossil fuels in the production of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and tractor-powered tillage that permits existing levels of production. In this context, it comes as no surprise then that as oil prices increase, so too does the price of food. Further amplifying the effects of oil price increases, is the diversion of agriculture towards providing for the booming biofuel industry. In a cover story for TIME Magazine, Michael Grunwald (28-33) observes that the diversion of grain-based agriculture from the food supply and towards the production of fuel means that biofuels like ethanol are imposing dramatic impacts upon the costs of maintaining food supply for both the worldââ¬â¢s hungry and the worldââ¬â¢s well fed, noting that ââ¬Å"the grain it takes to fill an SUV tank could feed a person for a year. â⬠Barrionuevo (2008) notes that while ââ¬Å"ethanol has raised the incomes of farmersâ⬠and ââ¬Å"given new hope to flagging rural economiesâ⬠it is a major impact on the cost of food. The demand for biofuel cannibalizes the existing food supply, increasing the collective demand for grain. Steinberg notes that what also compounds these very real long-term factors is the role which commodity speculation plays in shoring up food prices. He attributes the food price crisis to an onslaught of investment speculation comparable to the subprime crisis which drove up house prices earlier this decade. Quoting the British publication The New Stateman, Steinberg notes that hedge fund groups have thrown billions of dollars into commodities instead. But rather than going into gold and oil, they have gone into cattle, cocoa and corn as ââ¬Ësoft commodities. ââ¬â¢ Excessive investment drives up food prices, which encourages hoarding. Because a crisis of food supply guarantees a return on these investments, a vicious commodity super-cycle ensues.
